Khichan Bird Sanctuary: 20,000 Cranes, Three Hours from Jaisalmer

The demoiselle is the smallest crane species, and the flocks that reach Khichan cross the Himalayas twice a year, one of the highest migrations any bird attempts. The village built rectangular feeding enclosures, the chugga ghars, where grain is spread each morning. Leave Jaisalmer by 5 AM to catch the morning feeding, or stay the previous night in Phalodi, 6 km from the village, and arrive rested. The feeding is a morning event; afternoon visits find the cranes scattered at ponds and fields around the village, still visible but not massed.
