Vyas Chhatri and Bada Bagh: Jaisalmer's Two Cenotaph Gardens

Vyas Chhatri honors Ved Vyas, the sage tradition credits with composing the Mahabharata. The dedication is ancient; the golden sandstone cenotaphs themselves are the work of Jaisalmer's craftsmen across later centuries, carved with the same fineness you see in the city's havelis.

It faces west over the city, which makes it the sunset spot most photographers pick. The fort catches the last light in profile from here. Entry costs a small fee collected at the gate, and the final hour before sunset is the only crowded one.

Bada Bagh, the Big Garden, lies about 6 km north on the Ramgarh road. Its terraced hillside holds the cenotaphs of Jaisalmer's Bhatti rulers, from Maharawal Jai Singh II onward, each generation adding chhatris beside the last. The result reads like the dynasty's family tree written in sandstone.

It's quieter than Vyas Chhatri, and the low sun through the pavilion arches makes it the better choice for photographers who want the monuments themselves rather than the city skyline. The wind turbines on the ridge behind have become part of the site's strange charm.

Do both if you have a car and ninety minutes: they sit on connected roads and the light works in sequence, Bada Bagh in the golden hour, Vyas Chhatri for the sunset itself.

If you must pick one, choose by subject. Vyas Chhatri gives you the city and fort at sunset. Bada Bagh gives you rows of carved cenotaphs with nobody in your frame. Seniors should note both involve uneven steps; the lower terraces at each site still give most of the view.
